North Cornwall Town and Village Guide North Cornwall Directory North Cornwall Accommodation
St Kew Golf Course is set in attractive flattish parkland and is proving popular with the seniors and ladies among the 300 strong membership. It is a genuine pay and play course with six bay driving range that has become an attraction to holiday visitors staying in North Cornwall. St Kew Golf Course is ideal for golfers with families who feel a duty to remain with their children during the main part of the day, yet want to play early morning golf. The club also caters for golfers who want to split their rounds. The cost is £10 for 9 holes and £15 for 18. So if someone plays 9in the morning and fancies another 9 in the evening they can return for the second half later. St Kew is an undulating, easy to walk course set in beautiful countryside overlooking the Camel Estuary. The gentle slopes and good sand based greens constructed to USGA standards offer a challenge to both experienced and novice golfers alike. The many new plantations created at the construction stage are now well on their way to full maturity. Skilful use was made of the existing hedges, ponds and ditches. The whole course is well manicured and maintained. A patio, shrubbery and putting green in front of the clubhouse, beside the first and ninth green, are further features. The neat clubhouse features a pro's shop for Nick Rogers, a snack bar where meals are available all day, a comfortable lounge area and good changing facilities. Much attention has been paid to detail and the care that has clearly gone in to the planning, design and maintenance makes St Kew Golf Course a perfect place to play on a visit to the Duchy.
The Course.
The first / ninth hole is a straightforward par
3 / 4 with
a gully to the left of a gently sloping fairway. The second is a pleasant
par 3 followed by one of the feature holes measuring 306 yards with
ponds either side of the fairway. The fourth is a downhill par 3 where
nearest the pin awards are always made. A miss hit tee shot invariably sends
the ball into the large left bunker. The fifth has out of bounds to the
right and an attractively faced pond to the right of the green.
Behind the green and in front of the medal tee for the sixth hole lurks
the irrigation pond. Two bunkers guard the sixth while the seventh has
three sand traps to catch the unwary. The eighth is a long par 4 but, when
used as the 17th for a Medal the distant tee makes the hole
virtually a par 5 of approaching 450 yards. The final hole works back to
the clubhouse and patio close to St Kew Highway.
St Kew Golf Course was designed by David Derry, built by Glynn Construction and opened on June 1st 1993. It is a nine hole course with eighteen different tees and measures 4550 yards. The eighteen holes feature ten par fours, ranging from 247 to 441 yards and eight testing par threes.
